Nobody reads your company’s newsletter because it’s almost definitely boring.
Here’s what 98% of businesses include in their newsletter
links to their online resources, like blog posts and videos.
random testimonials and case studies of the product/service in action.
a link to the webinar they’re hosting next week.
a CTA to book a call.
some “fun” company news.
This stuff doesn’t work because it’s only interesting to YOU. It doesn’t improve the lives of the people who receive it.
And that’s why it’s getting ignored.
If you want start sending newsletters that prospective customers and clients actually want to read, click on and engage with, you need to make it worth their while.
Apply these three steps to make that happen:
Go deep on a topic that matters to your audience. Stop skimming the surface: we all know that AI can be useful when it’s used to support humans, not instead of humans. Give me some insight and expertise that a Google search can’t give me.
Have an opinion. Insight without opinion is boring. Don’t tell me that you recently attended the big industry conference, tell me why it sucked balls.
Be a person, not a business. Your newsletter should be from at . “I” is better than “we”. Remind readers that you’re a person by occasionally being honest, vulnerable and opinionated. “Look, I suck at writing at newsletters but I’m trying to get better. Reply and let me know if this one sucks too” will get so many more replies than “We’d love your feedback on this newsletter as we reconsider our approach. Reply and tell us if we’ve done a good job!

So I am a medical student who is very interested in helping my mom who has had some complications with a recent surgery she had and currently has a medical vac in the wound. She has had people mess up her care in the past so I decided to attend one of her dressing changes while in town for Christmas. We’re in the room and she’s getting her packing removed and I’m very interested. The nurse begins to pull out the long packing from her wound. She’s pulling and pulling and it’s just keeps coming. I begin to feel my vision blur. I announce to the room that I believe I may pass out. Mother tells me to sit down. I do. I sit on the floor with my head in between my legs because that has helped me in the past when I’ve nearly fainted. I’m sitting there chilling and then I just like don’t really know what happened next. I did not pass out according to the people watching me, instead I shook on the floor back and forth. According to my mom I looked like I was having a seizure but it did not last long. The nurse is now spooked so she touches me and I look up. But here’s the thing, I look up but do not know where I am or who the people in the room are. I don’t even know who I am! I feel as if I woke up from a dream where I was leading a whole other life. Like I was living a whole other life as a whole other person in a different place. However I don’t remember the dream only how it felt and that I was somebody else in this dream and that it felt very real. Once I realized where I was I tried to get up but felt like I was going to throw up. So I announce to the room more bad news. I then grab the nearest garbage can which was luckily was one of those really short office ones so it was perfect vomiting height. After throwing up, I was directed by the nurse outside of the room. This experience was so weird for me, probably the weirdest experience I’ve had. I’ve had one experience where I actually did have a seizure and was brought to hospital. This felt very similar. I also am not squeamish at all, it’s one of the biggest reason I chose the medical career I’m going into. So this reaction is SUPER out of character for me and is really shocking. I don’t know…. Has anybody else had this experience? If anyone has any insight please let me hear it.
